BEGIN BUILDING YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE

Once you’ve signed your book contract, it’s the perfect time to begin (or refresh) your social media presence. Being active on social media isn’t just about self-promotion—it’s about showing up, engaging with your community, and being discoverable. Whether you’re already online or just getting started, consistent presence helps readers, reviewers, and peers connect with you and stay updated on your work.

At its best, social media is about relationships. The more visible and authentic you are, the more likely it is that people will want to support your book when it’s ready for preorder—and long after publication. Start by choosing one or two platforms that feel natural for you, whether that’s Instagram, Facebook, Bluesky, Threads, or LinkedIn. Follow accounts tied to your subject area, engage with similar authors, and join conversations.

Remember, this isn’t about going viral—it’s about showing up. Posting regularly, even if just a few times a month, creates momentum and builds familiarity with your audience. And when your book launches, you’ll have a network that’s already listening.

We’ll be right there with you—sharing, promoting, and celebrating along the way.

Platform Tips & Hashtags

You don’t have to be everywhere—just where it makes sense for you and your audience. Here are a few ideas to help you get started:

  • Instagram
Best for: Visual storytelling, book cover reveals, events, behind-the-scenes looks
Tips: Use a mix of photos, videos, and stories/reels. Tag @upmississippi in your posts so we can amplify them.
    Popular hashtags:
    #Bookstagram #AmWriting #NewBooks #UniversityPress #MississippiAuthors
  • Threads & Bluesky
Best for: Quick thoughts, links to events/interviews, and joining author/book conversations
Tips: Think of it as a conversation hub—share article links, respond to readers, highlight your influences.
    Hashtags for discovery:
    #LitThreads #BlueskyBooks #AcademicTwitter (yes, it’s still a thing!)
    Also use book-specific hashtags: #BlackHistory, #LGBTQBooks, #FilmStudies, etc.
  • Facebook
Best for: Community engagement, event promotion, and connecting with local organizations/bookstores
Tips: Great for building author pages or joining topic-specific groups. Tag UPM and local stores/events.
  • LinkedIn
Best for: Academic or professional books, connecting with educators and institutions
Tips: Share milestones or link to interviews/articles you’ve written.
